The Map Store all started with door to door topographic lake maps sales by our founder Robert “Bob” Engelhardt and three reluctant kids. The idea expanded and in 1969 a store was opened in our living room, with people coming to the door to buy maps. In 1974 the first of many storefront locations was opened. Since Bob loved maps, he thought everyone else should as well so he and his wife Rita opened The Map Store. Bob figured out that the internet was going to be really big and he read articles and books to teach himself how to build a website. He then designed and built the FREEMAP.com web site to sell maps on. There were some links to get free state maps on the site, but the majority of it was to sell maps and globes. Today, The Map Store is a web store run by Bob’s daughter Jill. The family entrepreneurial gene lives on.
