The Geochron was invented over 30 years ago by James Kilburg, inventor of the car cigarette lighter, not to mention the first automatically-dialing telephone. His "inspiration" came from his wife, who accidentally woke him with a phone call at two in the morning while he was visiting overseas. (Thank you, Mrs. Kilburg.) |
WHAT MAKES A GEOCHRON TICK.
Each Geochron is totally handcrafted to meet your specifications. As you can see, it resembles a framed, lighted world map, 3 feet by 2 feet, and is usually hung on the wall. The map itself is actually a continuous belt of mylar film in constant motion, moving from left to right one inch per hour in synchronization with the earth's orbit around the sun.
HOW TO TELL TIME (WITH A GEOCHRON).
To find the current time for a specific location, simply find that place on the map. Chances are, it's in one of the world's 24 standard time zones, so you follow the dark blue boundaries of that area to the arrow at the top of the Geochron, which points out the correct time on the stationary time scale.
If you select a location in a "non-standard" time zone (which isn't hard to do, seeing how there are sixteen), its boundaries will not extend to an arrow. Instead, it will be marked with a letter and a number. The letter tells you which arrow to read, while the number indicates the number of minutes that particular locale deviates from standard time.
For example, India's designation is E + 30, which means you add 30 minutes to the time found on the E arrow. (You've just completed the most difficult calculation of global time that a Geochron owner ever has to compute. Congratulations.)
SUNRISE, SUNSET.
As we said earlier, the Geochron also indicates where the sun is shining at any given moment. How? Via the illuminated pattern on the world map. The left edge of this pattern marks the moment of sunrise, while the right marks sunset. This sunrise and sunset pattern changes continually, as the seasons progress throughout the year. (For you trivia buffs, this feature of the Geochron also displays the winter solstice, summer solstice, and fall and spring equinoxes each year.)
